Taxis in Maspalomas are highly regulated, safe, and easily available. They all operate under a official municipal license, meaning they use taximeters by law. Here is everything you need to know about how they work, how to get one, and what to expect regarding prices.
🚖 How to Catch a Taxi
You cannot use Uber or Cabify here, as ride-sharing apps are heavily restricted in Gran Canaria. Instead, you have three official ways to get a taxi:
- At a Taxi Rank (Parada de Taxi): This is the easiest method. There are dozens of clearly marked taxi ranks outside shopping centers, major hotels, beaches, and nightlife areas (like the Yumbo Centre or the Maspalomas Lighthouse).
- Hailing on the Street: If a taxi is driving past and its rooftop light is green, it is empty. Simply raise your hand to stop it.
- By Phone or App: You can call the official local central dispatch 24/7 or use their smartphone app.
📞 Official Contact Information
- Phone Numbers: +34 928 15 47 77 or +34 928 77 28 28 (Sociedad Cooperativa de Taxistas San Agustín).
- Mobile App: Download PideTaxi (the official national taxi app used in the area) to book, pinpoint your location via GPS, and track your driver.
💰 Tariffs and Pricing
All official taxis are white vehicles with a red stripe on the front doors. They must turn on the taximeter as soon as you get in.
There are two main official rates:
- Tariff 1 (Standard): Applied on weekdays (Monday to Friday) from 06:00 to 22:00.
- Tariff 2 (Night & Holiday): Applied during night hours (22:00 to 06:00), Sundays, and official public holidays. This rate is slightly more expensive per kilometer.
Estimated Costs:
- Short local trips: Moving between Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, San Fernando, or the Maspalomas Dunes usually costs between €6 and €12.
- Trip to the Airport: A one-way ride from Maspalomas to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) generally costs between €45 and €55, depending on traffic and the time of day.
💳 Payment Methods
- Cash & Cards: Virtually all taxis in Maspalomas are legally required to accept credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard). However, it is always polite to ask the driver "¿Se puede pagar con tarjeta?" before the journey starts, just in case their terminal loses signal.
- Tipping: Tipping is entirely optional in Spain. If the driver is helpful with heavy luggage or provides great service, rounding up to the nearest euro or leaving €1–€2 is appreciated but never expected.
